Magpie Clan
Although Beiden Pass and Seikitsu Pass are the best known routes through the Spine of the World Mountains, there exist many others. One such pass, not much than a single-file trail in places, was for many years plagued by bandits who would trick careless travellers, posing as guides before robbing them blind and leaving them stranded. A Miya Herald, en route from the Kaiu Wall to Otosan Uchi, fell prey to this trick. He carried vital news, and pleaded desperately with the bandits. Their leader, a cunning man known as the Magpie King, saw the opportunity presented to him, and offered to guide the Miya through the pass in exchange for official recognition of his claim to it. Thus the Magpie Clan was born, tasked by Imperial Charter to ensure the safety of travellers passing through the Onaga Pass. The Onaga are still thieves at heart, but now they earn their living legally, by charging extortionate rates for their service as guides, and for the ‘privilege’ of staying the night at the poor quality lodging houses that they run.
Onaga Family: +1 Perception
Ji-katana: As impoverished bandits, the original Onaga family were rarely able to afford proper daisho, and instead armed themselves with crudely forged swords, longer than a wakizashi but shorter than a true katana, and slightly straighter than both. They carry them to this day, stowing them within a full sized katana scabbard, for ease of drawing and so as to deceive their opponents. A ji-katana has a DR of 2k2 and may always be drawn as a free action, but will shatter if it inflicts more than 40 damage in a single attack.
Members of the Onaga family typically train in the Onaga bushi school.
